Since 1989 Benchmark Foam, Inc. of Watertown, South Dakota, has manufactured products made of Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) foam and other specialty plastics. The company’s output brings energy savings, protection, longevity, the ability to mimic brick and stone without the weight, and other advantages to construction, building insulation, insulated concrete forms, packaging, signage, and many other applications. Laguna Tools recently spoke to Bob Urevig, Benchmark Foams’ Facility Manager, about their use of the 24” X 36” IQ CNC router.
Bob begins, “We chose the IQ CNC router because many of our products, from architectural shapes with Exterior Insulation Finishing Systems (EIFS) to interlocking tank pads to insulating skirting for modular or site-built homes, are manufactured with tight tolerances. The IQ CNC gives us the cut quality and accuracy of larger machines in a smaller footprint. On the shop floor we use it with a Laguna Tools IQ Dust Shroud and IQ Tooling Kit. The result is we cut the same part the same way every day. Even better, we do it quickly.”
Bob and Benchmark surveyed the marketplace before they chose the IQ CNC. “Laguna Tools was happy to give us the names of other users we could contact. We spoke to several of them and found they had only good things to say about the unit. Like everyone, we looked hard at features and pricing before we made our decision. But we also paid close attention to the weight of the machines we considered. Although the IQ CNC isn’t physically very big, it weighs over 400 pounds. So we knew it would stand up to our production schedule better than “hobbyist” machines half its weight. All of that helped us make up our minds. Finally, a conversation with “Router Bob” (Alsup – Laguna Tools’ CNC Product Manager) assured us that we’d made the right choice.”
Is there another Laguna Tools machine in the future for Benchmark? It seems likely. Bob predicts that another router will find its way to the company’s sign shop before too long.
“This is a great place to work,’ concludes Bob. “I’ve been here over 26 years and value anything that will improve quality, control costs and reduce wear and tear on our employees. A lot of my responsibilities at Benchmark center on process improvement,” says Bob. I’m happy to say the IQ CNC fits neatly within that description.”
