Greg Lankston, president of Danville, Indiana’s Wood Magicians, didn’t set out to become a professional woodworker. Greg enjoyed successful careers in aviation, Information Technology (IT), and saw working with wood, mostly as a clock maker, as an interesting and fulfilling pastime. But over time his background in technology and love for all things wood were brought together with an able assist from a pair of Laguna Tools machines.
“Woodworking was strictly a hobby,” says Greg. “Then I became involved with the local arts district and discovered there was a real demand for what I was doing. I found myself making custom furniture such as benches, signage, toys, souvenir store magnets, and even a cremation ash holder.”
“I realized pretty quickly that I would have to upgrade my equipment to be able to reach the level of professionalism that was my goal,” he continues. “I discovered Laguna Tools in a Facebook woodworking group. I eventually settled on an IQ 24″ x 36″ CNC router with the carving tool set. It proved to be one of the best decisions, and investments, I’ve ever made. The IQ just doesn’t slow down. I keep it in top shape and it responds by running as long and hard as I ask. I recently added the 4th axis rotary tool. We can now produce really complex shapes with a lot of detail for items such as high-end furniture legs. The ability to produce specialty cut and round shapes has really expanded our capabilities.”
Greg’s success and satisfaction with the IQ CNC router led to his next Laguna Tools purchase, a CO2 SmartShop® Laser | EC. He explains, “A customer very strongly suggested that I add a laser to my shop. I bought one from another manufacturer but I wasn’t happy with the results. So based on my experience with the IQ CNC machine I realized there was no need to shop around. I called Adrian Martinez at Laguna Tools and told him what I needed to do. Before too long I was up and running with a Laser EC. We use it with a digital drawing table to produce just phenomenal graphics that include things like subtle shading effects. There’s no limit to our ability to engrave and cut. The laser has opened us up to a whole new level of capability for our customers.”
What’s ahead for Wood Magicians? Greg comments, “I see us using Laguna Tools machines exclusively. I hope to move to a larger facility and add a second Laguna Tools laser, possibly even a fiber laser, in the near future. I also see a Laguna Tools bandsaw in our future. I really can’t say enough about their products. They’re built like tanks and don’t need replacement parts every two minutes. They even give my shop a very professional shop appearance.”
There’s magic in the pairing of Wood Magicians and Laguna Tools. But it’s no trick. It’s all in the quality and professionalism we share.
