Wayne Foy is a retired Air Force loadmaster who now works as a contractor at North Carolina’s Fort Bragg. Foy is an experienced woodworker, who began as a hobbyist some 20 years ago. Then, like many Laguna Tools’ users, Wayne saw his pastime evolve into a business. Today, with an able assist from Laguna Tools, Wayne’s Wood-Works brings together both his passion and his patriotism.
“I always had a vision in my head of a wooden American flag,” explains Foy. So I made one and I knew right then that was what I was supposed to do. The field is purple heart wood, the red stripes are Padouk, the white stripes are either maple or Beech wood, and the stars are also maple or Beech wood inlaid into the purple heart wood.”
“I was using a small 30 watt laser at the time,” he continues. “But it made it impossible to engrave the star field to a decent depth without the need to cut, drill and chisel. My large flag is also 18″ X 36.” So it wouldn’t fit on the 18″ X 24″ table.
That’s where Laguna Tools entered the picture. “I started looking at 100-to-150 watt laser engravers with a workspace that would fit my needs,” says Foy. “I saw an ad on Facebook for Laguna Tools CO2 laser engravers, called them, learned more and decided that a 100 watt laser would definitely fit my needs without breaking the bank.”
“I was amazed at the size of the Laguna Tools engraver when it arrived. It’s a lot more robust than the smaller laser. A more powerful laser with a larger work space and an affordable price is just awesome. I set the piece in the engraver, adjust laser and computer parameters and then walk away to do other things.”
Like many Laguna Tools customers, he is quick to compliment the company’s service. “The guys at Laguna are also awesome,” he says. “They’re very quick to respond to any issues or questions I have.”
The capability and versatility of my Laguna Tools laser is far beyond the way I use it right now.
Foy sums up his relationship with his product and with Laguna Tools this way: “I’m very busy making my solid wood flags for solid Americans. The Laguna 100 watt laser is definitely the right tool at the right time for me. It has allowed me to improve the process of making my flags and reduced the time and work necessary to do the job. About all I make now are the wooden flags due to their demand and the limited time I have outside my day job. My goal is to someday have my own workshop and put as many wooden American flags into as many American homes as I possibly can. The capability and versatility of my Laguna Tools laser is far beyond the way I use it right now. If and when I find some free time I try to experiment with different materials and settings to see what its capabilities really are. And now I know its possibilities are nearly endless. ”
Wayne, we’re proud to call you a Laguna Tools customer. We salute you. As well as the stars and stripes.
