How and when did you get into woodworking? (Years as a woodworker or maker, history of the startup)
In my early 20's I was fascinated with all the cool tools that I saw each week on the New Yankee Workshop. I started to collect as many as I could afford and used them to build furniture for friends and family. when I was 24 I was offered an opportunity to work for the brother of a friend making elevator cabs. The work was fascinating, something different everyday. I purchased that company about 10 years ago. In the beginning we did most of the fab work with a circular saw, jig saw and other small tools in a 2000 sq/ft shop. We now work with some of the best CNC equipment in a 15,000 sq/ft facility.
How did you find out about Laguna products and woodworking cnc machine (s)?
Ads in magazines.
What Laguna Tools machinery are you using? What was the deciding factor in your choice of the machinery?
Easy choice based on quality and value
How does your Laguna CNC machine (s) compare to other machinery you have used?
It has been able to do everything I have asked of it. A big step up from where I started.
Did it help you decrease man hours, cut costs, or enhance complexity?
Absolutely, jobs that used to take all day now happen in hours. We are now able to produce parts that were not even possible prior to the CNC [machine].
What do you produce? How has a Laguna chc machine changed the dynamic of your production?
Elevator cabs and components. Right now our biggest challenge if trying to find a way to keep up with the machinery.
List the products you make, the materials you’re using. What are the challenges? How has the choice of a Laguna cnc machine helped you solve them?
Decorative wood and laminate panel systems for elevators, sheet metal components, handrails, metal trim and drop ceilings. The biggest challenge is being able to produce replacement parts. We offer the ability to replace just one panel in a wall system without having to replace the entire assembly. It was very difficult to make a replacement part that fit correctly before CNC.
Are there any stories behind the projects you make that you want to share?
Always something new and different. We have produced interiors from wood, laminate, cement board, recycled cardboard, glass and wire mesh etc.. Our products go in hospitals, schools, public housing, colleges, high end office buildings and casinos.
Have you had the need to contact Laguna for assistance since purchasing your cnc machine? If so, please describe the experience.
We have had very little problems. The small issues we did have were taken care of quickly
Do you see your business/hobby expanding in the future? What part will your Laguna cnc machine (s) play in that?
Looking forward to expanding our panel systems offering with reversible panels. Talking with Rick I am looking forward to seeing the new [Laguna Tools Smartshop®] LD3. Could be exactly what I am looking for to make our design efficient.
Do you have any advice you can give to people who are making woodworking and cnc woodworking their hobby / business? What would you recommend?
Insist on selling quality and always do the right thing even if it costs you money.
Expectations vs Reality: Did your Laguna machinery help you accomplish any initial goals after you made your purchase? Was there anything else about the machinery’s performance that helped you change your perspective on your hobby/business?
I am still amazed every time I see the cnc router cut a circle, the .006 kerf of the laser and how well parts from each machine fit together. I made the purchases because I wanted to sell quality and Laguna delivers.
