Chris Darrington – Utah Custom Woodworking Professional
Located in southern Utah, St. George area, Chris Darrington is a local professional woodworker who specializes in custom woodworking projects. As he says on his Instagram, “You design it, I build it.” Chris started woodworking about 10 years ago with his dad. Since his father was a builder, Chris took to it naturally and learned a lot, being able to work with him. Unfortunately, though, his father passed away 2 years ago due to health problems. With the passing of his dad, Chris realized to apply his custom woodworking skills fully and start a business.
A new business, though, requires new tools, and Chris needed an upgrade with his newly formed custom woodworking business to service the local people of southern Utah. In honor of his father always wanting to start his own business, Chris used the money left from his dad to purchase a Laguna Tools 14|12 Bandsaw. After researching for about 6 months, Chris was confident in his decision.
Because this is Chris’s first bandsaw, his experience has been limited. However, when he’s had a problem, contacting Laguna Tools customer service. The new bandsaw, though, helped him resaw the lumber needed for his custom woodworking projects, saving him lots of man-hours. For his business, he’s been able to save quite a bit of money by using a bandsaw to resaw the lumber he gets rather than purchasing wood that’s already finished. The custom cutting boards he makes require thin boards and precise work, so having a bandsaw he can rely on has been crucial.
One project Chris is particularly proud of is a cedar bench he made that sits on his mother’s patio. Becuase his father’s favorite lumber was cedar, this bench was a tribute to him. Though this was the beginning of his business, Chris wants to build his custom woodworking into a full-time profession, building custom pieces for the home for the local people of St. George, Utah. For his expansion, he hopes to be able to grow into a Laguna Tools dust collector and planer. Having a shop big enough to store all of these tools would come next.
Chris’s advice for new woodworkers or people wanting to develop a business of custom woodworking is this: “Buy right the first time and make sure you don’t need the income so you can build the project you want. This way you will enjoy it and it’s not a job.”
