One of the most interesting machines we offer is our CNC Plasma Cutter. While it is a very useful machine for its ability to cut thick metals like butter, the interesting qualities of the machine are found in how it cuts.
Plasma is one of the four states of matter and can be found all over the universe. It makes up solar flares, intergalactic plasma, aurora borealis, solar cores, stars, and even fluorescent lights. The actual state of plasma is “loosely described as an electrically neutral medium of positive and negative particles (i.e. the overall charge of a plasma is roughly zero)”. This doesn’t mean the particles are free but that they will react to a change is each other’s fields. Due to this property, they have a high level on conductivity for electricity and can even generate magnetic fields.
The process of ionization is responsible for the existence of plasma. Ionization is the change in the charge of an atom and occurs when the atom loses or gains electrons. However, plasma does not require 100% ionization of atoms to occur. If even 1% of the atoms are ionized a plasma can exist. The level of ionization is what defines how hot the plasma will be. Lower levels are referred to as “cold plasmas” and vice-versa with high levels. Don’t get the wrong idea though, plasma is never actually cold. The “cold plasmas” are still thousands of degrees Celsius.
Now think about how ridiculous it is that plasma cutters exist. We have been able to create machines that generate the process of ionization and result in arc flames that reach temperatures of up to 25,000 degrees Celsius, or 45,032 degrees Fahrenheit. It really gives a whole new perspective to how far manufacturing and CNC technology has come!
